Customer Reviews

If you have Seborrheic Dermatitis, you'll obviously want to try this product. Good luck!If you have Seborrheic Dermatitis, you're obviously here for a reason. You understand the struggle that many of us have. So let's get to the point. Try it. It may work for you like it has for others. It may not. But like me, if you have SD, you're willing to try anything.Pros:I've used the shampoo for about a month now and it seems to help somewhat. About 50% of my scalp is affected (ranging from the front of the scalp to the back of the head) and this product seems to be less irritating than others. It does seem to dry out the scalp a bit so use whatever moisturizer you've found works for you (I'm still in the process of trying to find mine). The symptoms have not gone away, but it's definitely more effective than all the other stuff I've tried (Head and Shoulders Dry Scalp Care Shampoo; Nizoral (ketoconazole); Dead Sea sea salt; Triamcinolone Acetonide; etc...).Cons:The biggest complaint I have is the smell. Wafts from the bottle smell OK (neither particularly bad or good), but 15 seconds after it hits the scalp, there is a noticeable pungent smell. Specifically, it smells like dirty creek water (just like the creeks I've been near in my backyard or on golf courses). Not only that, but the copper color of the shampoo resembles the dried runoff found on the sidewalk after a storm; reddish-brown with the same distinct smell. I feel self-conscious about the smell as it seems to linger for at least half an hour after rinsing, but have been told by others that they don't smell a thing.3Here's what to do if it turns your silver jewelry black....This review goes out to anyone who arrived on this page looking for a solution to pityrosporum folliculitis, perioral dermatitis, malasezzia, or some other type of yeast overgrowth. It also goes out to anyone who wants to understand the science of why it turns sterling silver jewelry black. I'm a scientist, so I can break it down for you, and tell you how to fix it. Long story short: this shampoo worked for my face very quickly, but in the process, it turned my jewelry black---which was unexpected, but normal.1.) After struggling for a month with a mystery microbial overgrowth on my face that that did not respond to Nizoral, coal tar, Clindamycin, but which did respond weakly to Nystatin, it became a process of elimination to narrow down what skin problems resemble acne, but are not acne, and have a strong fungal component. Pityrosporum folliculitis & perioral dermatitis look similar to normal acne, and may happen concurrently with acne, which is why it's difficult to diagnose. For me, this shampoo, used on face, scalp, and body, addressed my issues visibly within days. I had significant improvement after 48 hours, but visible improvement within 24 hours, and some "drying up" improvement in only 4 hours. While I'd have thought Nizoral would have been most effective, in this particular case, it was not. For whatever reason, selenium sulfide, applied topically, actually had a better effect. Since my symptoms had shown no sign of abating or running their course for an entire month, I'm not inclined to chalk rapid improvement up to regression to the mean. It worked for me----quickly. Will it work for you? It may or may not---it depends what type(s) of microbe you are battling. But it's at least worth a shot.2.) I leave my jewelry on in the shower, and after my 1st use, I was stunned to find that my silver jewelry had turned BLACK like coal. As a scientist, it was fascinating, since it was chemistry in action---I guess I always took my silver jewelry for granted. But it was shocking nonetheless....(Note: This will vary from user to user, based on the duration of contact with your jewelry, the mineral content of your water, the purity of your silver, etc....E.g. If you take 3-minute showers, your jewelry might not turn black at all.)Here's what happened:This shampoo contains selenium sulfide, with reacts with silver to form a layer of silver sulfide, which is another name for regular black tarnish. There's normally trace sulfur in the air around you, which is why silver tarnishes slowly over time. But in the case of this shampoo, there's a ton of sulfur, so we get a ton of tarnish. That layer can be scrubbed off with a polishing cloth, but that's a slow process, and it involves removing silver particles---you're essentially wearing down your silver. Or you can just do what I did, and electrochemically turn the silver sulfide back to silver. Here's the easiest way to do it:1. Get a plastic bowl, line it with aluminum foil. Aluminum is a metal that "wants" the sulfur more than silver does.2. Fill the bowl with hot water. You're going to make an ionic solution by adding either 1/2 cup of salt or baking soda to 1/2 gallon water. I wasn't particularly exact--I just eyeballed everything and used hot water from the tap. Baking soda might work better, but I didn't have any, so I used table salt.3. Submerge your silver item in the water, making sure that it's touching the aluminum foil.4. Give it a few minutes. You'll see the tarnish disappear. This is because the silver sulfide reacts with aluminum, forming aluminum sulfide. The ionic solution is what carries the sulfur atoms away from the silver to the aluminum. It may generate a slight sulfurous smell as a by-product.5. Take your item out, give it a rinse, then dry it. Keep it away from this shampoo, AND away from sulfur vapors.Congratulations, you've turned silver sulfide back to silver, and turned aluminum into aluminum sulfide! You're pretty much MacGyver right now. If I had a time machine and went back with this science, people would have assumed I was some type of wizard. Hope this helps everyone.4Amazing Product, Actually Works! Goodbye Itching and Redness!!I can't believe this stuff works as well as it does. I pored over the reviews before purchase, and was a bit skeptical, but for the $13 or so that I paid, I figured what the heck. I have tried literally everything to control my seborrheic dermatitis, from OTC remedies such as Ketoconazole, Selenium Sulfide and Pyrithione Zinc to $350 Clobetasol shampoo, and a whole host of cheaper Rx goops and ointments. I even tried crazy home remedies like olive oil scalp soaks, etc. Don't believe people that tell you this stuff reeks or stains towels, clothing, sheets; none of this is true. Rinse it out of your hair like anything else. No rocket science, no tricks. It smells like regular OTC Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo, which is to say, pleasant but not overly sweet or herbal. It's not very medicinal at all. The way other reviewers carried on, I was prepared for it to smell like hell! For those with experience, coal tar shampoo smells absolutely terrible, this stuff smells like spring meadows compared to that. After one use, no kidding, my seb derm was almost under control--itching gone, redness almost gone, very few flakes remaining. After three uses, I was (and remain) fully symptom-free. My scalp. Does not. Itch.I've been to over 4 dermatologists in 2 years (PPO and HMO). For all the hundreds I've spent, it's an amazing relief to have this stuff work so damn well. You owe it to yourself to try this if you're suffering with seb derm. Fwiw, regular Selsun Blue (which features the same active ingredient at perhaps a lower strength by default) didn't do the trick, but this stuff did. Whatever the case, this 1% selenium sulfide concoction is amazing. According to my dermatologist, the way to keep seb derm under control is to rotate, so use this and others throughout the week to "confuse" your scalp into behaving, while not allowing it to adapt to one consistent method of treatment. Either way, this stuff is worth its weight in gold. No more flakes, no more itching, no more redness AT ALL. Protip: if you have seb derm on the face or sideburns, a little of the lather from this will get rid of it as well. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice =].PS I have been using this for two months and have not lost any hair or incurred temporary baldness due to this product, nor has it otherwise ruined my life or pursuit of happiness. There's quite an array of interesting reviews for this shampoo.5
